Welcome to the webpage of the North Yorkshire Dales Biblical Literacy Project.

This is a project of two years duration, sponsored jointly by the Darlington District of the Methodist Church,
the North Yorkshire Dales Methodist Circuit and the CODEC Research Centre at St. John’s College, Durham.

Helping the Individual

Encouraging the use of a variety of individual Bible reading schemes / booklets

Encouraging the use of Bible studies / materials on the net

Using the circuit website in provision of home –grown bible studies

Introducing new ways of the devotional reading of scripture (lectio divina, imaginative reading,
Luther’s “rope” )

Encouraging the setting up of informal networks of supportive readers

Encouraging individuals to take up biblical studies courses / modules

Encouraging creative initiatives suggested by individuals

                                     

                                   

 

Helping the Church

Encouraging existing groups in their study of the Bible

Creating new groups to test different key packages

Working with single churches / clusters of churches
through concentrated spells of preaching and mid-week study

Use of “Bible Celebration Days” within the circuit

Using the rhythm of rural church life to promote biblical literacy, ie harvest festivals,church
anniversaries, flower festivals, hospitality events

Use of training days for leaders, perhaps jointly with other circuits and sister churches

Use of biblical literacy newsletter

Use of circuit website to promote materials

Encouraging groups to access courses / conferences around the region

Encouraging creative initiatives suggested by local churches

 

Helping the Community

Working with schools through assemblies, curriculum, after- school clubs

Making links with sympathetic community organisations to promote biblical literacy

Holding of biblical literacy events within the community (Eg. pubs, village halls)

Use of biblical literacy roadshows at village fairs / fetes / events

Holding of Bible summer schools for adults, alongside holiday clubs for youngsters

Use of book clubs / creative writing groups/ film clubs

Use of day and evening classes
